Delayed regional improvement plans will set out how schools should boost finances and use AI when finally published.

Officials are hoping to unveil the blueprints this term, having originally targeted an autumn 2025 release date.

Douglas Leckie, of the Department for Education, said the 鈥渃ore of the plans鈥 will be to explain how each region will deliver on the government鈥檚 national priorities 鈥 attainment, attendance, inclusive mainstream and reception-year quality.

鈥淭he idea is to articulate鈥 what are the attendance priorities in this region and what specifically is this region going to do to address those,鈥 he told the on Thursday.

Regional priorities

The plans 鈥 which are part of Labour鈥檚 RISE school improvement programme 鈥 will also outline 鈥渞egional priorities鈥 bespoke to each area.

Leckie said these will highlight 鈥渨hat each region is going to be doing in some of those underlying or contextual areas of challenge鈥 to make progress against the national priorities.

鈥淲e鈥檙e talking about things like financial sustainability, AI and tech, and parental engagement,鈥 he added.

鈥淭here鈥檚 significant scope in those sections of the plans for the regions to identify and articulate their own set of additional priorities above and beyond the national ones.鈥

Leaders oversee progress

Each region will also appoint its own team of sector leaders 鈥 called regional delivery partnerships 鈥 to oversee the progress of a handful of these local priorities.

They will provide 鈥渁n extra level of drive, of focus, of pace around the school improvement agenda with respect to those one or two things鈥, Leckie said.

The groups鈥 memberships are 鈥渧ery much TBC鈥. Leckie noted it is 鈥渃onceivable one or more RISE adviser might be part of these groups given their obvious overlap鈥.

How they will be selected 鈥渋s still being determined鈥 but is 鈥渓ikely to be a combination of appointments and a sort of expression of interest-type process鈥.
